Sarah Oliver
Alexander Technique Teacher

Change is possible

I am a trained Alexander Technique Teacher (AT) with a deep interest in horses and riding.

Since learning AT, I believe that the sense of ‘feel’ which all of us instinctively use when we ride or do any activity is oftentimes quite unreliable as a guide to what is really happening.  Learning AT can help restore the objectiveness of this kinaesthetic sense, which to my mind is of significant importance to anyone and of particular interest to the horse rider who is committed to improving her riding skills.

In addition to AT, over the past 5 years I’ve been studying Jean Luc Cornille’s Science of Motion work with horses which I find is incredibly congruent with Alexander’s work with people.

All of this work has only deepened my appreciation of how the way we use our bodies, and our horses use theirs, profoundly affects the future soundness of both human and equine.

One of Alexander’s discoveries was that he could give someone this kinaesthetic experience through the use of his hands which surpasses words or definitions.  As a qualified AT teacher and Member of The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (MSTAT), I completed over 3-years training and 1-year post-graduate work experience at the Royal College of Music to develop the skills necessary to communicate this sensory and embodied experience through my hands.

What Can I Do For You?

Do you ever find yourself thinking “well, that’s just the way I am” or “there’s nothing I can do about it”?  This may be so but there are a great many things that we accept with a certain resignation that we don’t need to.  With your active participation and willingness to learn; changing your habitual reactions is possible.

I can use the AT to help you recognise unhelpful and even potentially harmful patterns of movement and thinking which may be getting in your way, so you can learn to give yourself a real choice in how you move, think and live your life.

“There could be no greater source of individual empowerment and emotional well-being”.

I can only say that after less than a year my ankles feel like they did years ago.

I can go on walks without pain again and do vigorous exercise - I hold Sarah and the Alexander Technique she practices in the very highest regard.
